Oneida County Conversations
A Video About Poverty in the
Northwoods
Total Playing Time: 43:35
“Oneida County Conversations”, produced in 2007-2008, is a short documentary that exposes some of the basic and on-going barriers to prosperity faced by Oneida County residents and service providers. This video looks at four main topic areas: Access to Care (including health and child care), Transportation and the Disabled, Food Insecurity and Housing. Each section includes one-on-one interviews with Oneida County residents that have experienced poverty and the service providers that struggle to help these individuals meet their needs.
Key Messages:
- There is a large gap between seasonal residents and retired homeowners and the low-wage service providers who receive few, if any, benefits.
- Caretakers for children, the disabled or the elderly may be forced to give up on productive work and personal life goals to provide for their families.
- Despite assumptions to the contrary, their IS a need for these human services to fill currently existing social support gaps.
- Individuals run up against a barrier to their personal self-sufficiency when, rather than accepting opportunities that could increase their household income, they are forced to choose to remain on social support programs that fail to bridge these gaps.
